NBYVC Lakers Awards of Excellence North Bay Youth Volleyball held it's annual awards of excellence to honour all their athletes. Jayden Taylor and Kathryn Gribbon were awarded the Mona Lessard Award. The award is presented annually to a graduating club athlete who shows sportsmanship, leadership and dedication to the sport of volleyball. Mona has been a driving force in volleyball for many years in North Bay. Mona Lessard was the original founder of the North Bay Youth Volleyball Club and has served as a coach and a treasurer in the club early years. In addition to our club, Mona was involved with the elementary and high school teams, North Bay Ladies Volleyball League, and the Ontario Volleyball Association with Region 2. The North Bay Youth Volleyball Club is pleased to present this award to a graduating player. Lakers also honoured their six graduating players - Jayden Taylor, Kathryn Gribbon, Kristin Moore, Elizabeth Cochrane, Jennifer Sheehan, and Mila White. |

North Bay Youth Volleyball Lakers Garner Double Silver at OVA Championships

The Lakers 13U and 17U girls garnered silver at 8th annual Ontario Volleyball Association (OVA) Provincial Championships at RIM Park in Waterloo last month.
13U Girls
WATERLOO - The North Bay Youth Volleyball Lakers 13U and 17U girls teams earned silver medals at the 8th annual Ontario Volleyball Association Provincial Championships in Waterloo last month.
The 13U team began the tournament ranked 41st in the province and 10th in Division 2. They finished ranked 32nd in the province and 2nd in Division 2.
The team began its journey to the final by completing pool play finishing 0-3 on the first day and 3-0 on the second day. They qualified for the medal round by defeating the Etobicoke Titans (Toronto) 2-0 (25-13, 26-24) and went on to win the quarter-finals over MVC Maroon (Hamilton) 2-1 (19-25, 25-21, 15-12). The Lakers would advance to the gold medal game by defeating the Niagara Rapids (St. Catherines) 2-1 (16-25, 27-25, 15-10).
The 13U Lakers fell short of the gold by losing to the Maverick Rattlers (Ottawa) 2-1 (25-15, 24-26, 15-6).
In four previous tournaments this season the 13U were not as successful, with the Lakers saving their best performance of 2015 by capturing a Division 2 Tier 1 silver at the provincial championships.

15U Lakers Capture Silver in Battle of the Bay
The 15U NBYVC Lakers captured silver as the host team at the OVA Bugarski Cup - Trillium Division this past weekend in North Bay.
In pool play the Lakers finished first in their pool with wins over North Simcoe Wolves 2-0 (25-18, 25-9), 14U Vision VC (North Bay) 2-0 (26-24, 25-21), and the 15U Barrie Elites 2-0 (25-7, 25-19).
In the quarter finals the Lakers defeated the 15U Brampton Selects 2-0 (25-23, 25-11) to move on to the final four. The final four would end up being the battle of the bay. The 15U Lakers would defeated the U15 Vision VC (North Bay) in the semi-final match in straight sets 2-0 (25-17, 25-17).
In the gold medal match the 15U Lakers would meet up with the 15U Nipissing Wild VC (Sturgeon Falls. The Lakers would fall short in the hands of the Nipissing Wild VC in straight sets 2-0 (25-18, 26-24).

NBYVC 14U girls brought home gold this past weekend. The last time the 14U girls were in Orillia they captured silver.
Lakers went undefeated at the McGregor Cup in Orillia. In pool play the Lakers defeated Orillia Sun 13U 2-0 (25-17, 25-17) and the West Nipissing Wild 2-0 (25-9, 25-15).
In the quarter-finals the Lakers defeated the 14U Georgian Vista 2-0 (25-14, 25-13) and then in the semi-final the Lakers defeated their northern rivals Northern Chill VC 2-0 (26-24, 25-13).
The Lakers would then face the home town 14U Orillia Suns in the gold medal match. The Lakers would take the Suns in straight sets 2-0 (25-20, 25-20).
“The girls worked hard for the win and played well all day”, said coach Jerry Grabiec
The 14U Lakers have now won a Silver and a Gold medal this season.
The next competition for the 14U Lakers will be this weekend in North Bay as they will be playing up an age group in the 15U Bugarski Cup. The 15U NBYVC Lakers will hosting the Bugarski Cup at the Robert J Surtees Student Athletics Centre (Nipissing Gym).

NBYVC Lakers 16U Garner Silver
Vision VC (North Bay) won gold, Lakers captured Silver, and Northern Chill VC (Sudbury) took home the bronze.
Lakers finished first in pool play by defeating ACTS Elites 2-0 (25-10, 25-7) and Vision VC 2-0 (25-22, 25-8). In Quarter-finals the Lakers defeated the Orillia Suns 2-0 (25-19, 25-19) and in the Semi-final ACTS Extreme 2-0 (25-20, 25-10). In the Gold medal match it was an all North Bay final. Vision VC defeated the Lakers 2-0 (25-16, 25-19) and Northern Chill VC defeated ACTS Extreme 2-1 (25-22, 21-25, 15-9) to bring home the bronze. This is the second medal the U16 have brought home in two weekends. The Lakers took home Gold at the 17U Challenge Cup on December 6th.

The U16 Lakers squad won gold at an OVA tournament held at Nipissing University on Saturday

It was a solid weekend for the Lakers rep volleyball program, as the U16 girls who took home the gold at the U17 OVA tournament in North Bay.
The team needed three sets to bet the Phoenix Flare of Toronto (25-23,14-25,15-8).
The tournament featured ten teams from across the province.
The girls had only dropped one set during round robin play and won their playoff series against Georgian and Vision in order to reach the finals.

The under 14 North Bay Youth Volleyball Club Lakers brought home the silver at their first tournament of the year this weekend in Orillia.
Off to a great start they finished strong in their pool defeating Vista (25-6, 25, 13) and Barrie Elites Black (25-14, 25 – 22) . The play continued after lunch with a further win against the Attack 13U Red Devils (25-13, 25- 18).
The competition heated up as they sparred with their local competitors Vision – playing 3 sets (25-10, 23-25, 15-12) and finally winning taking them to the medal round. After an amazing and nail biting first set (30-32) they finished the second set (17-25) still very proud that they were taking home the silver.
“The girls played well all day”, said Coach Jerry Grabiec, “Our goal was to finish in the top 3 so we can play in the Championship Division at our next tournament, which the girls accomplished. Our goal now is to get better each tournament so that when Provincials rolls around the team is playing their best volleyball. Its a bonus to win a medal during the year however this teams focus is Provincials in April.”
